Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a armed takeover in September and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of his transfer to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, the capital city, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist US President Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that he be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which included plans to murder Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
