Defense Department Report Finds Defense Secretary Placed Troops in Danger with Messaging App Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon report has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing secret information in a private Signal group, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Event

The online conversation in question included details about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This discussion came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other officials in the group reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

However, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Reaction

The source said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the operation. He further stated that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been shared with Congress. An unclassified version is anticipated to be released later this week.
