Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The speculation around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team is likely designing a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths you can achieve with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
